The New Basin Blues is a long distance running club. We are a group joined together by a love of running because that is what we do. We have found that it is easier to train with others. Everyone gets better faster. We help each other.
We have no specific training program for everyone. We are far less structured than that. Everyone has his own program and will share it with you if you only ask. The Blues is a place where all programs converge. Someone is usually going to run just what you had in mind. NBB is a place where runners meet other runners in order to run miles.
We meet regularly to run and socialize. After we run, we usually have a bit of socialization. That means we share a cold drink under an Oak tree after a Sunday Run before we go on with our regular lives. We have parties and social meetings. Twice yearly, we have a PIZZA MEETING where the club buys your pizza and you just buy what you want to drink. This is usually where club business is conducted if you could call it that. At the winter Pizza Meeting, we collect toys and Christmas goodies for a local charity.
We do other charity work as well. The club collects running shoes and distributes them to homeless people in downtown LA. We also distribute soap, toiletries, warm clothes in winter, and whatever else comes our way. We have a fund established to support cross-country teams in less affluent high schools because we believe kids who run are a lot less likely to get in trouble.
You will see NBB runners at the track workout at Birmingham High on Tuesday nights. We don’t all run there and others who are not Blues run there, too. The program is separate from the Blues and is run by Coach Chuck Foote. The Blues who run Chuck’s workout pay track fees like everyone else.
Generally speaking, we run on Tuesday evening with Coach Chuck. On Thursday evening in the winter, we run 6 to 8 miles around the Sepulveda Basin. In the summer on Thursdays we do a trail run in on of the local canyons. On Sunday morning we have a club run, usually on dirt fire roads, trails and country roads of 10 to 15 miles. Of course, not all members participate in all activities. And there are other activities, races, and other events that are offered members regularly.
This is who we are. We are the New Basin
Blues Running Club. We are runners whose emphasis is on fun, food and finish
lines. If we sound like your kind of group, we invite you to come run with us.
See ya on the trails,
Duffy Walton
